New Businesses Changing Downtown Silver Spring: Cafes, Markets, and More

Several new businesses and establishments have recently opened or are under construction in downtown Silver Spring, while others have moved or expanded their offerings.

Adulis Coffee & Roastery, located at 7825 Eastern Ave., held its grand opening event in February. The coffee roastery and café offers Ethiopian coffee roasted and packed on-site, as well as breakfast and lunch items, including bagels, tuna melts, roast beef, black forest ham, turkey sandwiches, and salads. adulisstore.com

According to posted exterior signage, Awdamet Market, located at 8202 Georgia Ave., will soon offer Ethiopian takeaway. Celtic Cup Coffee, located at 8455 Colesville Road, held its grand opening today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, live Irish music and dance, a coffee roasting demonstration, and prize giveaways. Dacha Beer Garden, located at 1115 East-West Highway, has begun demolition and construction at the former home of Denizens Brewing Co., following the approval of their beer, wine, and liquor license application. The Guardian apartment building, located at 8605 Cameron St., is now pre-leasing apartments as construction nears completion of the studio, one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom units. Rents for the “exceptionally designed apartment homes with a luxurious Art Deco flair” range from $1,585 to $6,500 per month, with availability starting in mid-May, according to the building’s website. guardian.live

Laundry Force Factory is currently under construction at the former site of FVC Bank, located at 7901 Eastern Ave., which closed in 2020. Passport Eatz and Passport Juices, located at the Solaire Social food hall at 8200 Dixon Ave., are owned and operated by four brothers who grew up in Jamaica, according to Bethesda Magazine.

Passport Juices features a range of juices, smoothies, açaí bowls, pitaya bowls, and immunity-boosting shots with Clear Skin juice made from spinach, carrot, and grapefruit, while Passport Eatz offers a variety of dishes, including jerk chicken empanadas, oxtail coco bread sandwiches, Jamaican patties, and chicken wings in flavors like guava and mango habanero.

The Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging stations are now operational at Giant Food, located at 1280 East-West Highway. These free, ad-supported charging stations were installed earlier this year and provide special promotions for Giant’s loyalty program members. giantfood.com

Construction of the South Silver Spring Urban Park, located at 1110 East-West Highway, is expected to begin soon. The site is the former home of a National Tire and Battery auto center, which the Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission purchased in 2021 after the Montgomery County Council approved the acquisition for $7.5 million.
