Moorenko’s Ice Cream for Sale as Owner Faces Ongoing Health Challenges

Moorenko’s Ice Cream owner Susan Soorenko is seeking a buyer for her business so she can focus on recovering from ongoing medical issues caused by being hit by a car last year.

We reported on Sunday that the Moorenko’s Ice Cream café at 8030 Georgia Ave. had been closed for several weeks and may not reopen; the Moorenko’s location in D.C.’s Capitol Hill neighborhood is also closed.

Soorenko was struck by a car in February 2024 while crossing the street to visit a restaurant customer in D.C.’s Foggy Bottom neighborhood. She is now less than a month away from undergoing left hip replacement surgery, a procedure she has tried to postpone for nearly a year.

Bethesda Magazine reported on Monday that Soorenko is looking to sell her business because the pain from her injuries and the recovery process have made it difficult for her to manage the shops and oversee the production and delivery of her ice cream.

Soorenko confirmed the report in an email sent to the Source on Wednesday morning, noting that “the most important point for me is that I was not involved in a collision – my body was hit by a car as I was crossing a street, no metal to protect me.”

Several buyers are interested in Moorenko’s, and if a sale goes through soon, Soorenko hopes the downtown Silver Spring and Capitol Hill shops can reopen.

“I hope to find someone enthusiastic about our product and process who will have [a] vision to grow the company,” Soorenko said Wednesday. I plan on staying on as a consultant so the new owner isn’t left floundering.”
