Purple Line Construction to Impact Sligo Creek Parkway Beginning in Mid-September

Montgomery Parks announced Thursday that portions of Sligo Creek Parkway in Silver Spring will temporarily close in mid-September for Purple Line construction.

The road closures between Schuyler Road and Wayne Avenue will begin on or about September 16th, when the Purple Line project team will begin installing light rail tracks and reconstructing the intersection along Wayne Avenue at Sligo Creek Parkway. The Sligo Creek Trail is expected to remain open for most of the construction, but some short-term closures for trail improvements are planned.

According to MoCo360, the trail will be closed for four weeks in December for repaving.

Montgomery Parks and Purple Line project officials did not provide a timetable for the road’s reopening, but they will announce specific closure updates as the work progresses.

“Montgomery Parks is proud to work with the MTA on this project,” Montgomery Parks Director Miti Figueredo said on Thursday. “The parkway closure will allow construction of the Purple Line Sligo-Wayne intersection to be completed in a shorter amount of time while allowing Montgomery Parks to improve the roadway and trail in the area. We think parkway and trail users will be pleased with the result.”

The 16-mile, 21-station Purple Line light rail system will operate from New Carrollton to Bethesda and offer direct connections to Metrorail, AMTRAK, MARC commuter rail, and bus networks. The project is over 65 percent complete and is slated to begin operation in winter 2027.

“Work in this area is a critical part of progressing track installation and continuing the Purple Line toward revenue service,” said Ray Biggs II, MTA Senior Project Director for the Purple Line. “We are grateful for the collaboration and partnership with Montgomery Parks as we continue the momentum on the Purple Line.”

Signs will redirect vehicular traffic and pedestrians around the work zones during construction. Complete construction updates are available at purplelinemd.com.
