MCDOT Installing HAWK Beacon

The Traffic Division of the county’s Department of Transportation is installing a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk, also known as a HAWK beacon, at the intersection of Fenton St. and Roeder Rd. in downtown Silver Spring.

MCDOT’s Vision Zero initiative Work Plan for the 2022-23 Fiscal Year includes the installation of HAWK beacons to “provide additional protected crossing locations by installing new traffic signals and beacons, with priority installations in high crash risk areas with infrequent crossing opportunities. Pedestrian hybrid beacons can reduce pedestrian-involved crashes by 55%.”

A HAWK beacon was also installed earlier this year at Spring St. and First Ave. in downtown Silver Spring.
