Silver Spring Man Charged in Connection with Jan. 6 Insurrection

A Silver Spring man has been charged in connection with activities he undertook during the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, according to court documents.

Bryan Betancur, aka Bryan Clooney, aka Maximo Clooney, has been accused of three violations, including entering restricted grounds “with intent to impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of Government business or official functions, engages in disorderly or disruptive conduct in, or within such proximity to, any restricted building or grounds when, or so that, such conduct, in fact, impedes or disrupts the orderly conduct of Government business or official functions,” according to a Justice Department affidavit.

In addition, he faces two charges of unlawful activities on Capitol grounds.

According to the affivadit filed by the FBI, Betancur, “is a self-professed white supremacist who has made statements to law enforcement officers that he is a member of several white supremacy organizations. BETANCUR has voiced homicidal ideations, made comments about conducting a school shooting, and has researched mass shootings.”

Betancur wears a GPS monitoring device as a condition of probation for a previous offense and was living with his mother; GPS data filed with the affidavit appears to show that location is on 16th Street near East-West Highway.

That data also shows his position in and around the Capitol building on the afternoon of Jan. 6.

Betancur had received permission from his probation officer to go to the District of Columbia that day, claiming he would be distributing Bibles with Gideon International, an activity he had done in the past.

Investigators, following a tip, also identified social media sites associated with the suspect showing video and photographs believed to be him on the Capitol grounds.

In addition, Betancur told his probation officer he had been tear-gassed and also was inside the Capitol building; he later recanted the latter claim, according to the affidavit.
