Northwest Branch Floods, Closes Colesville Road

The Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River has flooded Colesville Road/Route 29, closing the roadway in both directions.

A police officer told the Source photographer to come no closer, as the county’s fire and rescue workers on the scene fear the Burnt Mills Reservoir dam just upstream from the bridge may fail.

Police are diverting northbound traffic at Crestmoor Drive. Southbound drivers did not appear to be able to get to the Burnt Mills Shopping Center.

This is the third time the stream has overflowed Colesville in Source memory, most recently in 2014; this level of water is the highest of the three floods.

Drivers should avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
