County Council Approves Redistricting Map with Two New Districts

The County Council voted on Tuesday to pass Bill 41-21, Elections Council Districts – Boundaries to revise the council districts in light of the 2020 census and a charter amendment passed in 2020 to create two additional districts.

Silver Spring neighborhoods inside the Beltway will be in District 4, which also includes Kensington, North Bethesda and Garrett Park for the 2022 election.

One exception, the Northwest Park/Oakview neighborhood (part of the Regional Services Centers area), which will be in District 5 (in green) with Hillandale.

In addition, the Four Corners neighborhoods of Woodmoor, North and South Four Corners will be in District 5, which includes White Oak, Colesville, Burtonsville, Rossmoor/Leisure World, Cloverly and Spencerville.

Those residents who would like to be sure in which district their neighborhood will be located can consult a new interactive map of the districts.

“[Tuesday’s] council vote is consistent with nearly all the recommendations made in the Commission on Redistricting Report with some minor adjustments proposed by our residents to better serve our community,” Council President Gabe Albornoz (D-At Large) said in a press release. “While we couldn’t accommodate every boundary change requested, this new map will serve the county well for the next decade because it recognizes our population growth and better represents our diverse community.”

The council in 2022 will include seven members chosen by voters who live in each district and four at-large members elected by all voters across the county.

The vote on Bill 41-21 was 8–1 in favor with Councilmember Andrew Friedson (D-District 1) opposed.
