The county’s annual leaf collection from the Department of Transportation will begin Monday, Nov. 8, in the designated leaf collection district, officials announced.
The collection district is within I-495, I-270, the Rockville city limits, Norbeck, Bel Pre and Bonifant roads, Northwest Branch Park, and the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County lines.
There will be two collections, November and December, in each service area depending on the weather. Residents can find more information and the schedule for their neighborhood by entering their street address online.
“This is an environmentally friendly and sustainable composting program that keeps fall leaves out of our storm drains,” County Executive Marc Elrich said in a press release.
Residents need to pile leaves near the street, but off the road, avoiding placing leaves on road shoulders, bike lanes and rain gardens. Misplaced leaves can disrupt traffic, impact storm water drainage, hamper snow removal operations and become a fire hazard for automobiles that may be parked over them.
In addition, avoid including any trash or non-leaf organic material including sticks, branches and garden debris. Those items should be placed in containers or tied in bundles no more than four feet long and set out for yard trim recycling pick up.
