The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center will waive adoption fees for all small animals, such as rabbits, gerbils, ferrets and guinea pigs, for two weeks, from Aug. 15 to Aug. 28.
Known as “Pocket Pet Palooza,” the promotion is sponsored by the nonprofit organization Montgomery County Partners for Animal Well-Being.
The two organizations recently joined in a similar effort that resulted in 162 cats being adopted.
Fees for small mammals run from $5–$75, with discounts offered to those who adopt a pair.
Summer months are typically busy times for shelters, but can be slow for adoptions. For example, MCASAC took in 36 small mammals for care in July and has a waiting list for owner give-ups, while only 12 were adopted.
“All potential adopters should review the Pre-Adoption Checklist prior to visiting or submitting a questionnaire online. Submitting a questionnaire does not reserve an animal for adoption and adoptions are first come, first served,” according to a press release.
Guidelines and the questionnaire are available online.
The shelter is open from noon–7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and noon–5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It is closed to the public on Wednesdays.
