The DC Blues Society celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with the Selwyn Birchwood Band. Metro accessible and ample free parking. Doors open at 5 pm.
Selwyn Birchwood hasn’t been on the blues scene long but has racked up multiple awards: winner of the 2013 International Blues Challenge; Blues Music Award and Living Blues Critics’ Award for Best Debut Album of 2014 for “Don’t Call No Ambulance”; and 2015 Blues Blast Rising Star Award. Birchwood plays the guitar and lap steel with fiery passion and sings with soulful energy. He’s warm, entertaining, fun-loving and lively on stage, winning over his audiences with his high-octane guitar playing and dedication to spreading the blues. “There’s nothing I’d rather be doing than playing the blues,” he says. “And I try to convey that with every song and with every performance.” Also a songwriter, his lyrics are fresh and thought-provoking. Birchwood wrote and produced all 13 songs on his newest album “Pick Your Poison”. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the sensational Selwyn Birchwood Band’s return DCBS performance after wowing the audience in 2014 and 2015.
“Selwyn Birchwood is an indelibly modern and original next-generation bluesman; his tough vocals, guitar and lap steel touch on classic Chicago blues, Southern soul and boogie.” – Washington Post
“Selwyn Birchwood is making waves, surprising people and defying expectations. Be on the lookout. He revels in the unexpected.” — Living Blues
Local favorite, Clarence “The Blues Man” Turner opens the show at 6 pm. Turner was inspired by the songs of Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf at the age of 8. Every wailing stroke of the guitar spoke to him, beginning his lifelong love affair with the blues. Clarence never fails to entertain with his skillful and joyful guitar playing and singing.
