New Theater Company Announced in Takoma Park

Two Takoma Park residents have launched a new nonprofit theater group and announced the inaugural production of the company. Co-directors Steve Quintilian and Julie Lloyd started Encore Theater Company and will produce “Next to Normal,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning musical as the group’s premier production.

AstroLab Brewing will host its first art show Friday night, while the D.C  Blues Society has its monthly happy hour concert at the American Legion. Saturday, Scrum Con 2020 for role-playing and war game fans comes to the Silver Spring Civic Building. Opportunities for civic engagement include a WMATA town hall on Monday to discuss budget and proposed route changes, a workshop on proposed RideOn route changes on Tuesday, and a discussion of budgets and other issues affecting public parking in Silver Spring on Wednesday.

Council Passes Bill to Require Air Conditioning in Rental Units

All rental units in the county will be required to provide air conditioning under the terms of a bill passed unanimously yesterday by the County Council. The bill will require that individual air conditioning units, or a central air conditioning system, be maintained in good working condition to provide an inside temperature of 80 degrees or less from June 1 through Sept. 30.

Long Branch Library to Close for Refurbishment

This Friday will be the last day that patrons can request a hold on books to be picked up at the Long Branch Library as staff prepares to shut the building for a refurbishment project. The library, located at 8800 Garland Ave. will close for six to nine months.
