The County Council will hold a hearing next week on Expedited Bill 18-17 that would authorize the planning, design and construction of the South County Regional Recreation and Aquatic Center in downtown Silver Spring.
The center is part of a proposal to redevelop and expand Elizabeth Square into a mixed-use development with retail and residential units including workforce, affordable and senior housing, along with the recreational facilities.
The complex is planned for the area bordered by Fenwick Lane, Second Avenue, Apple Avenue and the Metro right-of-way.
The center would include an 11-lane competition pool with therapy pool, leisure pool, sauna and spas, along with a gymnasium with high-school size basketball court and space for badminton, pickleball and volleyball.
The hearing will be held on Tuesday, June 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the Third Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building, 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville.
The hearing will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM) on Cable Channels 996 (high definition) and 6 (standard definition) on Comcast; Channels 1056 (HD) and 6 (SD) on RCN; and Channel 30 on Verizon. It also will be available live via streaming through the Council website.
