Baked Goods Fundraiser Held at Harvest Moon Festival

The Silver Spring Time Bank tables offered an array of goodies as a fundraiser at the Oct. 7 Harvest Moon Festival in Silver Spring. Eight bakers made everything from brownies to cupcakes for the event. The Harvest Moon Festival is an annual event that this year featured entertainment by several ethnic groups including Hawaiian dancers and singers, Caribbean steel drums, and others. Along with entertainment, there were vendors and representatives of local nonprofit organizations including Toastmasters and the League of Women Voters. Pennyworth to Close Bonifant Location, Move to Grace House

The Pennyworth Thrift Shop will close its location at 949 Bonifant St. and move to the basement of Grace House on the grounds of Grace Episcopal Church later this year. In an email to the Source, board president Jewell Little said, “Over the past year, the sales at the Pennyworth Shop have declined. A sufficient number of volunteers have not been available, and rent in the downtown Silver Spring area has been going up. County Setting Up “Citizenship Corners” to Help Immigrants Become Citizens

Montgomery County is setting up “Countywide Citizenship Corners” in libraries and other area locations to encourage eligible immigrants to become naturalized citizens. “The purpose of the Citizenship Corners is to get out information to our residents who are interested in becoming citizens,” said Diane Vy Nguyen-Vu, who leads the county’s citizenship initiative, along with the legal immigration service providers network. “When legal permanent residents become U.S. citizens, our county thrives,” said County Executive Isiah Leggett in a press release. “We urge our residents to start the naturalization process and to only seek advice and citizenship application assistance from reputable...

Ceremonial Groundbreaking Held for Silver Spring Arts Campus

About 100 residents joined county officials and others yesterday for a ceremonial groundbreaking of the Silver Spring Arts Campus on the site of the former 3rd District police headquarters at 801 Sligo Ave. Minneapolis-based Artspace spearheads the project, which has built 50 similar projects iincluding Brookland in Washington, D.C. and Mount Rainier. The organization was selected for this project through a process that included a request for proposals. County, church officials cut ribbon on new affordable housing

County Executive Isiah Leggett joined leaders of the Mount Jezreel Baptist Church and others Saturday to cut the ribbon on a new affordable housing project for residents 62 and older. The Sanctuary is a $20 million, three-story apartment building located at 426 University Blvd. E, behind the existing church and Mount Jezreel Christian School in Silver Spring.
