Local students stage walkout, march to Washington for gun control

Students head down Colesville Road for a march on Washginton. Several hundred Montgomery Blair High School students joined others from the area yesterday to march on Washington to demand new gun controls in the aftermath of the high school killings last week in Parkland, Fla. Manna Food Center demonstrates new mobile kitchen

Photo by Mike Diegel. “Manny,” a mobile kitchen from Manna Food Center, made its first appearance in Silver Spring over the weekend. The new program will provide a hands-on cooking classroom and will be used for targeted food distribution in areas with limited access. Manna has identified 20 census areas in the county that are most at-risk for food insecurity, including East County and Long Branch. Arts center offering creative camps for kids when schools are closed

With area schools now in session, CREATE Arts Center in Silver Spring is once again offering parents a creative care alternative with “No School Day Camps” on days when schools are not open. The camps for 6- to 14-year-olds are scheduled for more than 20 days on holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Veterans Day, as well as teacher conference days, professional development days and others.
