Library system to offer Food for Fines program

The library system announced it will once again offer a Foods for Fines program during the county’s Community Service Week Oct. 22-29. Library patrons who donate food items during that week can have fines reduced by $1 for each donated item. Donations will go to Manna Food Center, which will distribute them to needy residents. Nonprofit groups teaming up for Casseroles for a Cause

Five local nonprofit groups are teaming up this week to fill freezers with freshly cooked food for hungry and food insecure populations in a project called Casseroles for a Cause. Fall means beer festival season

First is the Takoma Park Nuclear-Free Beer Fest IX, which runs from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Cady Lee House, 7064 Eastern Avenue, N.W. The festival will feature beers from 15 local breweries and food from about 20 area restaurants, along with live entertainment. Ticket sales from the event typically raises about $20,000 a year to benefit the Takoma Foundation and its grant program for local organizations. Manna Food Center demonstrates new mobile kitchen

Photo by Mike Diegel. “Manny,” a mobile kitchen from Manna Food Center, made its first appearance in Silver Spring over the weekend. The new program will provide a hands-on cooking classroom and will be used for targeted food distribution in areas with limited access. Manna has identified 20 census areas in the county that are most at-risk for food insecurity, including East County and Long Branch.
