El Sapo Cuban Restaurant to Open Today

El Sapo Cuban Social Club, a new restaurant from Urban Butcher owner Chef Raynold Mendizábal, will open today (Oct. 30) at 4 p.m., according to a press announcement. El Sapo (“The Toad”) is located at 8455 Fenton St., with the entrance on Wayne Avenue. Baked Goods Fundraiser Held at Harvest Moon Festival

The Silver Spring Time Bank tables offered an array of goodies as a fundraiser at the Oct. 7 Harvest Moon Festival in Silver Spring. Eight bakers made everything from brownies to cupcakes for the event. The Harvest Moon Festival is an annual event that this year featured entertainment by several ethnic groups including Hawaiian dancers and singers, Caribbean steel drums, and others. Along with entertainment, there were vendors and representatives of local nonprofit organizations including Toastmasters and the League of Women Voters. Annual Pie Contest Set for Sunday, with a Twist

The Takoma Park Farmers Market 7th Annual Pie Contest is set for this year with a twist—for the first time, professional bakers can enter the contest. The Old Takoma Business Association announced that contest would be held Sunday, Sept. 23, when bakers will enter their best one- or two-crust pies. The main ingredient of the pie—sweet or savory—must be a seasonal ingredient found at the market, and fillings must be homemade (homemade crusts strongly encouraged). County Offering Grants to Assist with Food Security Issues

Montgomery County is offering grants ranging from $500 to $10,000 to community organizations working with food security issues, according to a press release. The grants are intended to assist organizations to improve capacity and infrastructure, or “to support inventive and collaborative approaches to reducing food insecurity.” Nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations can also use the grants for assistance to the populations they serve, including preparing meals, distribution and delivery, or recovering food that would otherwise be wasted.
