Hen Quarter, the Southern-themed restaurant and bourbon bar on Ellsworth Drive, held its ribbon cutting and grand opening last night.

The menu includes updated Southern fare including Southern-fried chicken, Virginia ham steaks, shrimp and grits, short ribs and barbecued chicken, along with accompaniments such as collard greens, pickled okra and fried green tomatoes.

The bar features more than 40 different bourbons, along with a dozen types of rye whisky and a selection of Scotch and Irish whiskeys.

The restaurant is open Monday-Thursday 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.-midnight, Saturday 10 a.m.-midnight, and Sunday 10 a.m.-10 p.m. It offers happy hours weekdays and brunch Saturday and Sunday.

Mike Diegel, a founding member of Source of the Spring, is a Silver Spring advocate who has been appointed by the county executive to several committees and task forces. He currently is a member of the Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment District Advisory Committee. His background is in journalism and he earned a bachelor of arts in communications from McDaniel College. He is self-employed as a communications consultant and is an active volunteer with Appalachian Great Pyrenees Rescue. He has lived for more than 20 years in Northwood/Four Corners with his wife Trish and multiple Great Pyrenees dogs. He is better known around Silver Spring as the Guy with the Big White Dogs.
